September Is Big for Pet Parents: Here's What's Actually Happening This Month

September Is Big for Pet Parents: Here's What's Actually Happening This Month

September might be the busiest month of the year for pet celebrations.

Two big month-long observances land at the same time.

Happy Healthy Cat Month. For cat parents. Focused on health, wellness, and making sure your cat is thriving, not just tolerating life.

National Service Dog Month. For the dogs doing serious work. Guide dogs, medical alert dogs, PTSD support dogs, mobility assistance dogs. The ones with a job.

Plus a bunch of specific days worth marking:

  • Sept 13, National Pet Memorial Day
  • Sept 13-19, Adopt a Less-Adoptable-Pet Week
  • Sept 21, National Cat & Dog Gut Health Awareness Day
  • Sept 24, Remember Me Thursday (shelter pets who never got adopted)
  • Sept 28, World Rabies Day

That's a lot! So here's how to think about it.

You don't have to do something for every single one. Pick the ones that hit home. If you have a service dog in your life, this is your month to shine a light. If you have a cat, this is your month to really check in on their health.

If you have both? Even better. There's a lot of month ahead.

How to actually engage with September:

  • Pick 1 or 2 days that matter to you, not all of them
  • If you have a cat, do a real health check-in this month (dental, weight, coat, litter habits)
  • If you know a service dog handler, thank them and their dog
  • Consider fostering, donating, or volunteering during Adopt a Less-Adoptable-Pet Week

"September is a full-time job for a pet parent. Just show up where it matters most."

with love, Ava
